In addition, the order formally:

Bans torture and inhumane and degrading treatment of detainees by requiring that the Army field manual be used as the guide for terror interrogations.

Closes the CIA’s secret prisons and ends the Bush administration's CIA program of enhanced interrogation methods that have included abhorrent procedures like water-boarding.

Provides the International Committee of the Red Cross access to all U.S.-held detainees.

Establishes an interagency task force to lead a systematic review of detention policies and procedures and a review of all individual cases.

We applaud our new president for taking this important step on his second day in office. UUSC believes that any government-sponsored acts of torture, under any circumstances, are profoundly immoral, unjustified, and illegal. These practices can and must be ended now.

President Obama expressed the values and beliefs of all Americans of conscience in his inaugural speech when he stated, “We reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals. Our founding fathers, faced with perils we can scarcely imagine, drafted a charter to assure the rule of law and the rights of man, a charter expanded by the blood of generations. Those ideals still light the world, and we will not give them up for expedience’s sake.”

The Four Agreements

We had a church service about The Four Agreements several weeks ago at All Souls UU Community, and I found them very inspiring and helpful:

1. Be Impeccable With Your Word

Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.

2. Don't Take Anything Personally

Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won't be the victim of needless suffering.

3. Don't Make Assumptions

Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.

4. Always Do Your Best

Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse and regret.

I have been doing 2 & 3 pretty consistently for several years now, and they definitely make a difference. Number 4 is problematic, because I am often not sure whether I am doing my best (one viewpoint is that each person is always doing their best).

Number 1 is where I am most focused on growth. I remember that when I did a 10-week Landmark workshop on integrity several years ago, just being in integrity about fulfilling my commitment to be there every week was a struggle! I also have a tendency to gossip, though I sometimes catch myself, and appreciate it when others alert me when I am gossiping.

(Thank you to waterfaery for reminding me about this!)

The astrological omens suggest that a similar principle will soon hold true for you: The more you sob and blubber, the smarter you'll get. The louder you howl and moan, the more likely you'll be to attract benevolent influences and unexpected help.

Maybe that horoscope explains the crying jag that hit me last night. I certainly hope something productive comes from all of it, because I really did not understand where it came from and was pretty disappointed that I wound up feeling drained and exhausted. I am ready for benevolent influences and unexpected help!

Needless to say, I was there to help make room for people to sleep! It was pretty fun, because the project was to pick up my mom's sewing room, so I got to handle lots of pieces of pretty fabric in lots of different colors. Then they fed me & we played Upwords. (My family normally plays games during meals if we are not watching TV.)
Saturday morning I did chores (laundry, room cleaning) while listening to the radio. I danced every other dance, which was plenty (my thighs are still sore). I will be going back regularly!
About 10:15 p.m. I drove out to Sidhehaven in Rainier, where <img src='http://l-stat.livejournal.com/img/userinfo.gif' alt='[info]' width='17' height='17' style='vertical-align: bottom; board meeting, then back out to Rainier to see the newly dedicated shrine to Grandmother Spider, hang out, go hot tubbing, etc. I was sorry to miss the altar dedication, but I could feel the charged energy around the new shrine.
This week is fairly full too: this afternoon with otterdaughter working on her taxes & on fused glass, Tuesday night at the Interfaith Works annual meeting, Wednesday night at ecstatic dance in Seattle, Thursday night orientation & dancing at the Grind, Friday afternoon with Grandma Mickey, Sunday morning church, Sunday afternoon greeting my sister & her kids. Wait - nothing scheduled on Saturday? Amazing!
